This edition of Logging-on sees the introduction of a newsflash. The newsflash is meant to quickly and conveniently update you on various global forest engineering matters, without having to read an entire article.
This edition has a number of articles focussed on oil and fuel. The first describes oil analysis and why it should be carried out by all professional machine operators. Biodiesel is becoming more commonly available, but can it be used for harvesting and timber transport machines? FPInnovations recently concluded a small case study on biodiesel use in timber transport trucks and have just commissioned an even larger project that will look at biodiesel use in forestry operations, with the focus on economics and technical issues.
Keeping optimal tyre pressure on forestry machines is a real challenge. An LED tyre pressure monitor is fitted to the valve which flashes when the tyre pressure drops below a certain value. On the roads side we look at a few techniques to reduce the amount of sediment leaving our roads.
Under new products, Tigercat has a new 8-wheeled harvester on the market, specifically designed for thinning, and the new Stihl MS 441 chainsaw has taken a large technological jump.

Carrying out regular oil sampling and analysis can help identify problems before they become really expensive to repair.
LED’s that flashes when your tyre is below the required pressure are now available.
FERIC conducted a case study to look at the effects of using biodiesel for log haulage.
This study looks at five different techniques to reduce sediment pollution from unpaved roads.
Tigercat looks to be rounding off its product line-up with this wheeled harvester for use in thinnings.
